Defence Minister Parrikar hands over indigenous Akash missile to Air Force

Gwalior, July 11 (ANI): Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar handed over indigenously developed surface-to-air Akash missile system to air force at a base in Gwalior. The missile has a speed three times faster than that of sound. It carries a 55 kilograms warhead and can hit eight targets at a time within 25 kilometres. The defence minister handed over the missile system to Air Force Chief Arup Raha. Parrikar lauded air force for its pro-active efforts during development of the missile system. Parrikar urged the scientist community to develop much more potent weapon in the form of Akash-II. On this occasion, the officials demonstrated how the missile system functions. The missile system was prepared using 92 per cent of indigenous machinery, can be transported anywhere via road, water or air transport. It can track a target 100 kilometres away and hit the enemy’s helicopter, plane or drone from a 25 kilometres distance.
