Floods in Amreli render fertile land barren

Amreli, July 02 (ANI): Though flood water has started receding in parts of Gujarat, farmers in Amreli region are in disarray after heavy rains washed away fertile soil off the farming land. Gujarat has been receiving heavy showers since June 23 as a deep depression has been formed over the Arabian Sea. At least 34 people died in Amreli, the worst affected area in the state. Farms in Amreli wear a barren look with the rains washing away the fertile black soil and leaving behind rocks. Water Supply Minister of Gujarat, Vinay Rupani, said that the state government would provide relief package to ease the woes of the farmers. Former President of Gujarat unit of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, Prafulbhai Senjaliya, said that the extent of damage caused by the rains was way too much for farmers to deal with on their own. Such was the intensity of rainfall in Gujarat that teams of Indian Air Force (IAF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) staff were deployed to evacuate some people to safer locations. Two Mi-17s were flown in for the evacuation process and stranded people were provided with packed food items.
