Himachal Pradesh allows tribal women to inherit property

Shimla, July 30 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh executed a court order permitting tribal women to own land in the state. The decision taken at 44th meeting of Tribal Advisory Council (TAC) led by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh also makes younger sibling eligible to inherit property, ending an age-old customary law. Under an old tradition still practiced in Lahaul and Spiti district of the state, elder sibling inherits the entire property, whereas the younger sibling either joins monasteries or nunneries. The tradition also prevented women from inheriting property.
Lahaul and Spiti is the only district in the country with 1067:1000 sex ratio. In a landmark judgement, Himachal Pradesh High Court last month gave land inheritance rights to tribal women. Legislator of Lahaul and Spiti district and Vice Chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, Ravi Thakur, said that the decision would help the landless people.
