Muslims across India offer prayers to celebrate Eid al-Fitr

New Delhi/ Srinagar/ Hyderabad, July 18 (ANI): Muslims across India celebrated Eid-al-Fitr on Saturday marking the end of the month-long fasting period of Ramadan-one of the five pillars of Islamic teaching. Muslims visited mosques and attended prayers in the morning, listened to a ‘khutba’ (sermon) and gave ‘zakat al-fitr’ (charity in the form of food) on the day of Eid. Thousands of Muslims thronged New Delhi’s famous Jama Masjid in the morning. Eid is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal. Chief cleric of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari wished the Muslim community on the occasion. In Srinagar city of Jammu and Kashmir, Muslims accompanied by their children headed out of their homes early in the morning and offered prayers. Both young and old alike greeted each other warmly and hugged friends and family. Hyderabad city of Telangana also wore a festive look as people dressed up in traditional attires ventured out to celebrate Eid.
