Rajnath Singh favours conditional removal of AFSPA in northeast

Guwahati, July 11 (ANI): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday (July 11) spoke in favour of conditional removal of the shoot-to-kill powers given to security forces in northeastern states under the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). Speaking to mediapersons after attending a meeting with the chief ministers of northeastern states regarding security issues, Singh said under certain conditions the law can be entirely lifted. Earlier in May this year, lawmakers in Tripura had revoked the controversial law that had shielded soldiers from prosecution for 18 years. The withdrawal of the AFSPA was hailed by human rights groups, who say it could pave the way for other states to roll back special powers used by the army to contain separatist, leftist and tribal rebels. The law is still in force in other states of the northeast where violence has surged in recent years. Singh claimed the insurgency problem in northeastern states has reduced.
