SC rejects death sentence plea, gives life term to 3 convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): In a setback to the Central government, the Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the curative petition demanding death sentence of 3 convicts- Murgan, Santhanam, Periwalan- in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The court also upheld the commutation of death sentence to life term of three convicts. The central government had told the Supreme Court that no mercy could be shown to the killers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi as it opposed the Tamil Nadu government’s move to set free seven convicts by granting them remission of sentence. Gandhi was assassinated as a result of a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, in Tamil Nadu on 21 May 1991.
