Woman alleged of practising witchcraft beheaded by villagers in Assam

Sonitpur, July 21 (ANI): An elderly woman was beheaded by youths of a village accusing her of practicing witchcraft in Assam. The villagers believe the woman to be cause of the miseries faced by the villagers. Seven youths from the village have been arrested by the police in connection with the murder of the tribal woman named Poni Orang and machete used to kill her has been recovered. The incident reportedly occurred after a woman Anima Ronghanti, who claims to be a goddess told the villagers that Orang, a mother of five was a witch and that she would bring bad luck to the village. Following this, Orang was dragged out of her house to nearby stream, stripped naked and beheaded in broad daylight. One of the villagers, Malti said that Orang had indulged in evil practices and had abducted people. Witch-hunting is an evil practice and superstition which still exists among some communities in Assam. The government had of late said it would bring about an act with more punitive actions to check the menace. The state government is also planning to setup a special court to conduct trial of cases related to witch-hunting, in which 82 people have died in the last five years.
