Woman dies after being allegedly set on fire by police officers in Barabanki

Barabanki, July 07 (ANI): A woman succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday after she was allegedly set on fire at a police station in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh. The woman was allegedly set on fire by a policeman posted at Kothi police station after the officers there reportedly demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh to release her husband, who was detained for questioning in an attempt to murder case. The police, however, claimed that she attempted self immolation. The woman, who had sustained 80 per cent burns, was admitted to Lucknow’s Civil Hospital, where her condition was critical. Before her death, the woman had said that the two police officers have repeatedly harassed her in the past and had also expressed her wish to meet state CM Akhilesh Yadav and demand justice. According to reports, Superintendent of Police has ordered suspension of police station in-charge and sub-inspector against whom cases have been lodged under various sections of the IPC.
