Exiled Tibetans in Dharamsala hold candlelight vigil over self-immolation death

Dharamsala, August 30 (ANI): Tibetans living in exile in hill town Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh held a candlelight vigil to mourn the death of a Tibetan woman who died after a self-immolation protest. Tashi Kyi set herself ablaze on the night of August 27 in northwest China’s Gansu province, reportedly in her protest against the demolition of her home by police and officials. Exiled Tibetans marched together and recited prayers while they were joined by supporters and foreigners who expressed solidarity with their cause. The president of Tibetan Youth Congress, Tenzing Jigme, said Tibetans set themselves on fire because of China’s hard-line policies in Tibet. China has ruled Tibet with an iron fist since troops took over the region in 1950, and those controls often extend to ethnic Tibetan areas in other parts of China. Tibet’s spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, fled into exile in India in 1959 after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule.
