Fifty-three infants die in 10 days in Odisha’s hospital

Cuttack/ Bhubaneswar/ New Delhi, Aug 31 (ANI): At least 53 infants have died over the past 10 days at a premier state-run hospital in Odisha, sparking furor among residents. The deaths have forced the government to order an enquiry against the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Pediatrics (SVPPGIP), also known as Sishu Bhawan, in Cuttack. Meanwhile, Odisha’s Health Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak reached the hospital to assess the situation after the father of a dead child alleged that medical staff mistreated the poor. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the central government has extended all help to the state. A team of officials from Delhi, led by additional secretary of Central health ministry, Arun Panda, had also visited the hospital last week and assured help to the hospital and state government. The families of deceased infants have accused the medical staff of negligence. However, the hospital authorities have refuted the allegations. A four-member technical team has been set up to inquire into the deaths of infants that include a pediatrics doctor from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The team has been asked to submit a report based on which further action would be taken.
