Hindu devotees throng temples to celebrate first Monday of ‘Sawan’

Varanasi/ Gorakhpur/ New Delhi, Aug 03 (ANI): Thousands of devout Hindus thronged temples of Lord Shiva across India to commemorate the first Monday of the month-long auspicious ‘Sawan’ or monsoon festival. Devotees in temple town of Varanasi gathered in large numbers to offer milk, curd, honey and holy water on Shiva lingam (a representation of Hindu deity Shiva) on Monday morning. All Mondays are considered highly auspicious for fasting during this month. Saffron-clad devotees chanted religious hymns outside temples to please Lord Shiva. Kanwarias or devotees of Lord Shiva undertake a tedious foot journey to the Hindu pilgrim centres of Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand to fetch holy waters of the river Ganges for their village temples. Long queues of people waiting with an assortment of religious offerings like joss sticks, red vermilion and flowers were also seen outside the temples. Devotees in Gorakhpur city of Uttar Pradesh said every day is important in this auspicious month.
