Landslide due to heavy rainfall leaves at least 500 stranded in Uttarakhand

Uttarkashi/ Kangra, Aug 02 (ANI): More than 500 people including Hindu pilgrims were left stranded due to landslide triggered by incessant rainfall in Uttarakhand. The crucial Gangotri highway was blocked after rocks continued to fall from the hill. The pilgrimage to four temple towns of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees every year to Uttarakhand. The tourists and pilgrims waited for hours for the highway to be opened as the vehicles stood in a long queue. Though the roads were opened, there was continuous falling of rocks from the loosened area due to the heavy rainfall. Disaster management officer, Devendra Patwal, said falling of rocks has led to the blocking of the route. Meanwhile, a landslide in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh wreaked havoc as houses were damaged and cattle killed. Huge mass of rocks and mud has flown into villages. In the past one month, rainfall in the district has damaged over 70 houses. Four people were reported dead by the administration and more than 109 cattle have also died. Additional deputy commissioner of Kangra, Sudesh Kumar Mokhta, said the affected families will be compensated.
