Malkangiri, August 02 (ANI): Maoist rebels in Malkangiri district of Odisha have called for a week-long shutdown in observance of Martyrs’ Week, in memory of rebel leaders killed by security forces. The rebels have erected a pillar in the forest to pay homage to their slain leaders. The rebels also asked the villagers to support them. Security forces have intensified the vigil in the insurgent-prone district since the rebels began their Martyrs’ Week from July 28. The police on Saturday (August 01) killed three Maoist rebels, including two women cadres, in an encounter in a remote forest under Malkangiri district. According to police, 20-25 rebels were holding a meeting inside Burudi jungle near the border of neighbouring Chhattisgarh state. When the rebels challenged the security personnel through firing, the police team retaliated, killing three rebels on the spot. Fearing further insurgent activities, the state government has stopped bus service in the district. The private bus operators have also stopped their services.
