Sacred ‘Modi threads’ sell like hotcakes ahead of Raksha Bandhan in India

Siliguri/Ludhiana, August 29 (ANI): Sacred threads known as rakhis adorned with pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are selling like hotcakes across states on Raksha Bandhan. People are thronging the shops selling rakhis in different colours and varieties but Modi rakhis are popular among girls and women alike. In Siliguri, customers were seen going through various kinds of sacred threads but most of them preferred the ones that displayed Modi in red and blue traditional attire. Rakhi is a symbolic holy thread, which a sister ties ceremoniously on her brother’s wrist as a mark of bonding between them on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. Meanwhile, a shopkeeper said that they are being asked only to show ‘Modi rakhis’. Raksha Bandhan is a festive occasion that falls on the full moon day and is celebrated by Hindus, almost throughout India. While the sister ties the thread, the brother pledges to protect his sisters’ honour and offers some cash or other gifts to her. Consequently, the markets register brisk sales during this period.
