Tennis ace Sania Mirza recieves Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award from President Pranab Mukherjee

New Delhi, August 29 (ANI): Tennis player Sania Mirza received the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award from President Pranab Mukherjee on the occasion of National Sports Day at the Rastrapati Bhavan. She received a medal, certificate and cash prize of Rs. 7.5 lakh on Saturday. Mirza became the second tennis player after Tennis ace Leander Paes to have accorded with the highest sports award in India. Mirza won her first women’s doubles Grand Slam title by lifting the Wimbledon title with Swiss legend Martina Hingis in June. Meanwhile, Shuttler K Srikanth was awarded Arjuna award by Mukherjee. Amputee climber Arunima Sinha received the Tenzing Norgay award by President Pranab Mukherjee. Sinha who had to get one of her legs amputated below the knee after she was pushed out of a running train while resisting thieves, scaled the highest peak Mount Everest on May 21, 2013 and became the first woman amputee to scale the world’s highest peak.
