Five militants held guilty of holding secret camp in Kochi

Kochi, Nov 26 (ANI): A Kochi court on Wednesday found five members of militant outfit Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) guilty for holding a secret camp in Panayikulam village of Kerala. The quantum of punishment is to be announced on Thursday. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Kochi city upheld sedition charges against two of the five accused. Sedition is a serious and non-bailable offence under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). NIA had arrested 17 people in the case, 11 of whom were given a clean chit while the remaining one was found to be a juvenile and his case was transferred to a juvenile court. Defence lawyer, V.T. Raghunath, said that the court also slapped the charge of criminal conspiracy on some of the accused. The accused have been convicted for criminal conspiracy under section 120 B of IPC, for taking part in the meetings of unlawful associations, and for advocating, abetting, advising or inciting the commission of unlawful activities under sections 10 (a) (ii) and 13 (1) (b) of Unlawful Activities(Prevention) Act (UAPA). SIMI is a banned militant outfit in India.
