Karnataka village marks second year of being liquor free

Gulbarga, Dec 1 (ANI): While several states in the country are still pondering over implementing a liquor ban, Nimbal village in Gulbarga district of Karnataka commemorated the second anniversary of being alcohol free. Till two years ago this feat seemed far off as alcohol was easily available in the village and not just the men but even the youngsters were regular drinkers. Drunken brawls and domestic quarrels were common but today, the residents have completely given up alcohol. The women in the village are credited with bringing this dream to life. A committee of 51 women from the village ensured all the four shops in the village selling liquor were shut. A villager, SS Paga, said that the village has been saving a great deal of money since the liquor shops were shut. It is a great step taken by the elderly and the women in our village, they did a good thing. Approximately in a year our village was spending between rupees 10 million ($150,420) to 15 million ($225,631), we are saving that amount now. We constituted a registered body of 51 ladies in our village to accomplish this task.
