People should not tolerate intolerance: Amartya Sen

New Delhi, Feb 13 (ANI): Addressing a gathering at the Editors Guild of India, Indian Economist Amartya Sen questioned if India was really intolerant. Asserting intolerance should not be tolerated, Sen said silencing of dissent and generating fear in minds of people makes it much harder to have a dialogue-based democratic society. He added that while the constitution did not have anything against anyone eating beef, or storing it in the refrigerator, some “small but organised groups” were trying to impose their “norms of behaviour”. He further said that people should be more vocal, and that the courts need to be more proactive, about protecting the fundamental rights of the citizens.
