IPL changes venue after court debars matches in drought-hit Maharashtra

Mumbai/Beed/New Delhi, Apr 30 (ANI): Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman Rajeev Shukla said that Visakhapatnam would be the neutral venue for Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants. This decision came to the fore after Bombay High Court on April 13 ordered the IPL to shift all remaining matches of its ongoing ninth season scheduled after April 30 out of drought-hit Maharashtra in view of severe water crisis. The court pronounced its judgment after hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) against hosting the cash-rich cricket league in Maharashtra. Many parts of India are witnessing drought conditions in view of deficient monsoons over the last few years. Agriculture has been adversely affected and lower prices have added to farmers’ plight, leading to a surge in cases of farmers’ suicides.
