Dalit community denied salon services for generations

Muzaffarnagar (UP), June 27 (ANI): Dalits in Bhoopkheri village of Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district have spent their lives in the shadow of discriminatory norms after Thakurs’ barred them from getting haircuts in public salons and use water from wells meant for higher community. Giving details, a local, Harish Kumar, said the norms are in existence since his childhood, adding that they tried to go to the salons many times but owners gave excuses. Kumar added that it’s high time and all Dalits are standing together to end this discriminatory custom. Meanwhile, District Magistrate Dinesh Kumar Singh said the issue will be brought to the notice of the authorities, adding that stringent action will be taken. With a motive to end the biased custom, Dalits from the village stood united and demanded equal rights from the Sarpanch.
