Floods kill four rhinos, 15 hog deer in Kaziranga National Park

Assam, July 29 (ANI): Four rhino calves and at least 15 hog deer have been killed in Kaziranga National Park due to flooding in Assam state. Incessant monsoon rains in the tea and oil-rich state of Assam have led the burgeoning Brahmaputra river and its tributaries to burst their banks – affecting more than half of the region’s 32 districts. Kaziranga National Park, home to two-thirds of the world’s endangered one-horned rhinoceroses, has been submerged in water, forcing animals to look for shelter in human settlements. Divisional Forest Office, Kaziranga National Park, Subhashish Das, said that the situation was worse than last year. The floods have left the animals more vulnerable to poaching.
