Indonesia puts Gurdip Singh’s execution on hold

Jalandhar (Punjab), July 29 (ANI): Indonesia has put on hold the execution of Indian national Gurdip Singh, who was found guilty of smuggling heroin in Indonesia in 2004 and had been sentenced to death. A district court in Banten province sentenced Gurdip the capital punishment in February 2005 and his appeals were also turned down by the Banten High Court and the Indonesian Supreme Court. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted, “Indian Ambassador in Indonesia has informed me that Gurdip Singh whose execution was fixed for last night, has not been executed.” Gurdip’s wife Kulvinder Kaur on Friday thanked Swaraj for all her support. Elated Kulvinder Kaur said she spoke to her husband over phone today and urged the government to bring him back soon. However, it is not clear why Gurdip was spared, while the four other convicts were executed by the firing squad. Forty-eight years old Gurdip was among six convicts, who were spared as of now.
