Training programme held for rubber tappers to generate employment opportunities

Tripura, Oct 22 (ANI): Tripura is the second largest producer of rubber after Kerala. Rubber cultivation is one of the main occupations of the local tribal people in the state which has a suitable agro-climatic condition. Aiming at developing skill and generating more employment opportunities for the tribals, a 15-day long training session was organized under the aegis of the Government of Tripura in cooperation with the Tripura Skill Development Mission along with the Rubber Board of India. The session basically aimed at imparting training to the rubbers latex harvest technicians popularly known as tappers so that they can make the most of scientific way to increase production of latex. Thirty tribal youths from the remote region were imparted hands-on training in the scientific method of rubber latex harvesting. Besides class room lectures, the trainees were also given practical demonstrations in the field for tapping, collection and processing of latex. The trainees found the training useful as they were not aware of new scientific techniques. It is worth mentioning that at present around 75,000 hectors area is under rubber cultivation in Tripura though the target is to spread it upto 1 lakh hectors with an additional target of another 1.5 lakh hector under Right to Forest Act
