announced dates for local body electionsThe agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front has decried Nepal government’s decision to hold the local bodies’ polls without amending the Constitution. The Madhesi parties held a meeting in Kathmandu and have threatened to end the support to government and hold protests. The Cabinet on Monday evening decided that the polls would be held on May 14 according to the recommendations of the Election Commission.The government instructed the Finance Ministry to release funds for the polls. The Cabinet also decided to discuss the long-awaited Constitution amendment bill in Parliament in an attempt to appease the Madhes-based parties. According to constitutional obligations, Nepal has to hold elections to local bodies and for the provincial and central assemblies by February 2018.
