PATNA: Special secretary, health department, Devottam Verma on Monday said the state government was making special financial arrangements for modernisation of six government medical colleges in the state, including the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).
Addressing the annual function of Physiological Society-2011 at PMCH, he said it would be brought on the international map. “For that the state government is planning something big in the next financial year,” he said.
Verma said a proposal would be sent to the state cabinet regarding appointment of 400 new assistant professors to overcome shortage of teachers in the medical colleges of the state.
Speaking on the occasion, PMCH principal Dr M P Yadav said despite constraints, PMCH was still one of the top medical colleges in India. He said the college would admit 150 students from the next academic session.
Society president Dr Rajiv Ranjan Prasad said a special cell would be set up in the physiology department to conduct research in stress-related diseases.
State ovenment effort to improve medical education in bihar appears to be half hearted. Upgradation of medical colleges is impossible without proper and dedicated medical faculty. Bihar govenment has always used backdoor entry to fill faculty positions by doctors working in PHC and CHC. Medical colleges and their hospitals are run by RMO and Senior residents without proper supervision of Professors and Associate Professors. Senior govenment doctors are dedicated to their private hospitals and clinics. Medical teachers working in three new medical colleges are getting salary for nothing. Healthcare might have improved on papers but it is far from reality.
