Italy’s takes U Turn: Marines to return back India, today

Under Immense pressure from Indian Diplomacy, Italy has finally decided to send back its two marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone to face murder trial in India.

The Two marines would return to India today, as scheduled earlier.

On Thursday evening, External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said in a tweet post, “Following diplomatic contacts #Italy informed that Marines will return to #India in accordance with timeline provided to Supreme Court”.

“The two sailors will start tonight (Thursday) for India,” the Italian government said in a statement.

“The Italian government requested and received written assurances from the Indian authorities regarding the treatment of the marines and the protection of their fundamental rights,” the government said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Prosecutors in Italy have moved to have a technical review of the computer and the camera aboard the Enrica Lexie merchant ship from where the shooting took place.

The camera and computer aboard the ship where the incident took place are expected to provide details of the case previously unavailable to Italian authorities. “The conversations between the captain and the marines, as well as communications with Italian authorities, are recorded on that computer,” said Rome prosecutors in a statement Wednesday.
