Cyclone Pam hit Vanuatu with winds up to 340 kilometres an hour. The category five cyclone’s the worst storm to hit the Pacific island nation in almost 30 years.
Unconfirmed reports say 44 people are dead.
It’ll be some days before the true death toll and the full extent of the damage are known.
The United Nations and Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop say they’re on standby to help out.
“Our thoughts today are with the people of the Pacific who are facing the impact of tropical Cyclone Pam. We are deeply concerned by reports that lives have been lost in northern Vanuatu. They are still unconfirmed but we are deeply concerned by those reports.”, Bishop said.
Neighbouring nations are also suffering the wrath of Cyclone Pam which is being compared in strength to Typhoon Haiyan which killed more than 6, 000 in the Philippines in 2013.
