The first international aid teams reached Vanuatu on Sunday. They were greeted by scenes of devastation after Cyclone Pam hit the Pacific island nation over the weekend.
Winds of more than 300 kilometres an hour have taken their toll.
Local residents say they and their families were terrified.
“They were really, really scary, they cried and I cried also but I just had to be strong for them. We’re all alive, we survived here.”, said one of the residents.
The number of confirmed deaths reached 10 on Sunday.
There are fears the total figure will rise as search and rescue teams reach the remoter outlying islands.
Vanuatu is a cluster of 83 islands. It’s one of the world’s poorest nations and highly prone to disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis and storms.
