The guests were all smiles on the red carpet, with celebrities relentlessly joking, but they also highlighted the importance of Paul Newman’s belief that taking fun seriously can make a real difference in the lives of children who need it.

Tom Hanks says, “How long are we going to be here? Three and a half hours? It’s a good hang. Three and a half hours. What is it – a Monday night? Is it a Monday night? I have no idea. What else are you going to do on a Monday night? Stay home and binge on ‘Homeland’? I don’t think so. I’m coming here to help some kids go to summer camp.”

The gala will benefit the network, a growing global community of 30 camps and programs serving children living with serious illness and their families. SeriousFun was founded by Paul Newman in 1988 and has served more than 500,000 children and families from over 50 countries.

In addition to the New York Gala, SeriousFun will host similar events in Los Angeles on May 14, 2015 and in London on November 3, 2015.
