A hostage situation Is underway in the Tunisian capital, where gunmen attacked the parliament building, killing at least eight tourists and taking other visitors hostage in a nearby museum.
Local media say exchangeS of gunfire rang out from parliament around midday.
Witnesses say large numbers of police had moved in to evacuate the area.
Security forces were surrounding the Bardo museum in central Tunis where at least two militants were holed up.
The venue is often packed with foreigners, according to the interior ministry.
Tunisia’s 2011 uprising against an autocratic president inspired the Arab Spring revolts in Egypt, Syria and Libya.
And until now it’s largely avoided the chaos and violence that has plagued those countries.
