The single-engine plane clipped a tree as it went down shortly after taking off from Santa Monica Airport, about a mile (1.6 km) away.

NTSB investigator Patrick Jones said the investigation is ongoing and the plane’s recovery was due later on Friday.

The plane leaked fuel and suffered engine failure shortly after take-off, causing the crash.

However, NTSB investigators on site declined to confirm any causal relations.

Following the NTSB news conference, the vintage plane was removed from the golf course by truck.
