A police officer in Madison, Wisconsin fatally shot an apparently unarmed African-American teen on Friday evening.
Local media say the shooting took place after an officer, who had been responding to a disturbance, forced his way into an apartment that the 19-year-old male had gone into.
Once inside, police said a struggle broke out between the teen and the officer and the officer opened fire.
Dozens of people began protesting at the site of the incident, police said.
MADISON POLICE CHIEF MIKE KOVAL SAYS:
“In light of so much things that have happened, not just across the country, but in our own community, it’s understandable that the reactions seen by some of our citizens are extremely volatile, emotional and upsetting and we understand that. It’s absolutely appropriate under the circumstances. We would urge, obviously, that every exercise restraint, and some calm and let us allow the department of criminal investigation to conduct their affairs.”
The shooting comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of police violence against minorities in the U.S.
Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Justice released a report that accuses police in Ferguson, Missouri of engaging in racially biased practices.
