Seven people – four crew members, two medical workers and the baby – were killed in the crash.

The Russian-made Mi-17 transport helicopter came down “in the wider area” of Belgrade airport, the defence ministry said.

Momcilo Ruzic, a man from the nearby Surcin village, a suburb of Belgrade, went to the site to see what had happened after hearing news reports about the crash.

“I heard nothing, me nor my neighbours… Some of them stayed awake after midnight , but nothing was heard, I saw it on news, so that’s why I came out,” he said.

Serbia’s B92 broadcaster reported the helicopter had picked up a baby in the southern Serbian region of Raska after an ambulance taking the child to hospital for treatment for respiratory problems was blocked by a landslide.
