The letter also informs the Islamic Republic that Congress must ratify any deal in order for it to be binding.

The letter, organized by freshman senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, is the latest salvo in a bitter battle over Obama’s continued diplomatic efforts centering on Iran’s nuclear program

It comes less than a week after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed Congress about the threat of Iran at the invitation of House Speaker John Boehner – and after President Obama reminded Congress in an exclusive interview with Reuters that foreign policy runs through the executive branch.

But the 47 senators – including majority leader Mitch McConnell and presidential hopefuls Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, and Ted Cruz – apparently disagree, informing Iran that Obama will leave office in early 2017 and most of the signatories will still be in office.

Congress is working on a bill that would toughen sanctions on Iran if the US and Iran fail to reach a deal.
