Beijing: Around 30 Taxi Drivers in China attempted mass suicide yesterday in front of a shopping mall in broad daylight. They were protesting against poor compensation given by Taxi Companies, with whom they are mandated to join.
The drivers hailing from Suifenhe, in Heilongjiang province were found in unconscious state with pesticides bottles by their sides. They were rushed to hospital and luckily all of them survived.
According to a 2011 law, the taxi drivers are required to join government-appointed taxi operators or leave the industry in return for compensation. Taxi drivers are not allowed to be self-employed.
