Dhaka: Security was tight around the jail in Dhaka where Islamist opposition leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman was executed. He was hanged on Saturday, days after a court rejected his final appeal.
He’d refused to beg the president for a pardon. Kamaruzzaman was convicted of genocide and torture of civilians during the 1971 war that saw Bangladesh break away from Pakistan.
His party, Jamaat-e-Islami, issued a statement accusing the Bangladesh government of taking political revenge.
It’s declared Sunday a day of prayer and called a general strike for Monday.
Paramilitary troops have been deployed across the country to stem any sign of protest.
