Mass Cremation of Earthquake Victims becomes sight of Kathmandu

Kathmandu: Rows of smoldering bodies are cremated in Kathmandu as Nepal begins to cope with the aftermath of Saturday’s powerful earthquake.

Over 4000 people have been killed, thousands others have been injured.

Families and friends of the dead lit hundreds of funeral pyres in towns and villages across the country.

The Nepal Army have stepped up operations as international aid teams begin to arrive.

The wounded lay in open air relief camps awaiting treatment. Some were rescued by helicopter from remote regions.

Government officials say food, medicine, and body bags are in short supply.

But it’s scenes like this that give hope rescues are still possible…

A team pulls a Nepalese woman out of a collapsed building alive, some 50 hours after the quake struck.

Her family wipes away tears of joy as they show her picture to the media.

This is Nepal’s worst disaster since 1934 when some 8500 people were killed in a similarly devastating earthquake.
