Conakry: In Guinea’s capital Conakry, at least five people were shot and wounded on Monday during anti-government protests, according to a government spokesman. Protesters took to the streets to voice their anger over the timing of elections and what the opposition says is targeted violence against them.
They barricaded streets and burned tires overnight, in neighborhoods of the capital that are considered opposition strongholds.
Some, like this man, called for President Alpha Conde to leave.
Security forces moved in to clear the streets, firing tear gas as protesters threw stones.
Guinea announced last month that a presidential election would be held in October, a decision the opposition says breaks an earlier agreement to hold long-delayed LOCAL elections first.
The country emerged from decades of military rule in 2010, but since then elections have been marred by violent protests and parties divided along ethnic lines.
