You are watching the strokes of a record-breaking swimmer. Not for speed, but for age, as Mieko Nagaoka is the world’s first centenarian to complete a 1,500 meter freestyle heat.
Nagaoka began swimming while she was in 80s
The Japan Masters Swimming Association confirmed Nagaoka’s world record which was just under an hour and 16 minutes for the 100-105 year range, but said it was still in the process of registering it with the international swimming federation.
This is Nagaoka’s 25th record since she began swimming in her earlier 80s as part of a rehabilitation program for an injured knee.
Local news says that the 100-year-old trains four times a week and takes private lessons to improve her record-breaking performance.
