Kathmandu: Piles of rubble still surround damaged buildings in parts of the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu on Sunday (May 10), with many residents unable to return home or reopen their businesses.
On April 25, a devastating earthquake killed over 7,900 people and flattened towns and villages across central Nepal.
Some residents stood and surveyed their wrecked homes and communities. A sign peeking out of a gap in a damaged and dusty building read “children’s story”.
The quake has affected 8 million of Nepal’s 28 million people, with at least 3 million needing tents, water, food and medicines over the next three months, according to the United Nations. About 519,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed.
The government said the cost of the first phase of reconstruction would be $2 billion and it had set aside $200 million towards that.
