Typhoon Noul may trigger Landslides and Flash Floods in Philippines

Manila: Typhoon Noul crashes along the northeastern shore of the Philippines, sending residents scrambling for safer ground.

The weather bureau says the category five storm — packing winds of up to 185 kph or more than 114 mph– is expected to trigger landslides and flash floods.

“They came and told us to evacuate because we are living on the coastline and the waves might destroy our homes”, one person said.

But residents here are no stranger to this kind of weather.

Some 20 typhoons cross the Philippines each year on average — though the storms are becoming more fierce.

In 2013, more than 8,000 people died or went missing during Haiyan, another category five typhoon.

With rescue crews standing by, the current storm is expected to make its way towards southern Japan by Tuesday.
