Drugs Abuse and their Illicit Trade is one of the menaces our society is currently facing. The most common victim are teenagers and young adults who fall for it without knowing about its ill effects, causing harm to their health, psychological problems, or social problems or puts them at risk of those dangers.
In order to spread its awareness, United Nation observes 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. It is as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. Supported each year by individuals, communities and various organizations all over the world, this global observance aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society.
Soumita Saha, a noted Singer from Kolkata too joined the bandwagon by highlighting the issue of drug abuse among her fans and followers. She has raised this issue on social networks, blogging conferences many times. She is also working on a music video which would spread the awareness of Drug Abuse among the masses.
In her words, “Our country is also caught in this vicious circle of drug abuse, and the numbers are increasing at an alarming rate. Drug abuse and Illicit Trafficking happens mainly because of lack of knowledge. Forget children, even parents are unaware of the blooming drug trade”
This day as an event is celebrated worldwide with much conscious fervor to make people aware and emphasize the hazards of drug addiction and illegal trafficking. A problem which is a major deterrent to humanity and a poison to the well-being of the youth in particular, poses greater problems to the socio-economic and political stability of a nation and disturbs the sustainable development of a nation.
Soumita, who is also a reputed blogger said “I come from a family where talking about Drug and its ill-effect is not considered a taboo. This helps especially young kids to know and understand the menace of Drugs. Awareness at early age is the best tool for fighting against Drug Abuse.
Apart from prevention, we also lack in Rehabilitation of Drug Addicts. The social stigma attached to it completely isolates such people, many of whom are victims and try hard to get out of it.
According to Soumita, “We often isolate a drug addict person who actually wants to leave the Addiction and lead normal life. I think this is something our society does wrong. We should encourage any such people around us and keep them occupied with other activities. On the other hand, Isolation of Drug Addicts may deteriorate the situation”.
