RANCHI: Army personnel are strict and lack sense of humour. Anyone under this perception should think twice after visiting fourth battalion of the Bihar regiment that is celebrating its golden jubilee here.
The regiment has a pipe band and one “Jorz” band. The name of band is missing from dictionary because it was named so some 20 years ago when a subedar major failed to pronounce the word, “jazz”, despite best efforts, and the regiment decided to name it the way he used to pronounce.
Today, the band is one of the most sought-after bands in army which performed briefly during barakhana’ on Thursday night.
Jorz, along with the pipe band, would perform once again on October 29 and 30 when the regiment celebrates golden jubilee and the governor inspects guard of honour.
The battalion completed its 50 years on Friday and remembered its contribution made in service to the nation. Having served across geographical boundaries from Ladakh to northeast and from handling counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir to Sri Lanka in the south it boasts of coveted ceremonial guard at Rashtrapati Bhavan and Red Fort. The battalion has to its credit one Kirti Chakra, one Veer Chakra, one Shaurya Chakra, seven Sena Medals, 23 chiefs of army staff commendation card and 19 army commander commendation cards.
Presently stationed at Namkom, the battalion commemorated son of the soil Birsa Munda as their regimental hero and organised sainik sammelan, blood donation camp and tree plantation to celebrate 50 glorious years.
Captain Rahul Kumar said though the celebrations would continue throughout the month, a special programme would be organised on October 29 and 30 for which at least 500 guests from Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa comprising retired officials, junior commissioned officers and other ranks have been invited.
