PUNE: India’s first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi said here on Monday that in the recent assembly elections in Bihar, three-fourths of the total votes cast were of women, who came out in large numbers to press for better law and order.
“Such a change, where women are coming out to vote in large numbers, does not come about easily,” she said, while addressing a convention that was organised by the Jai Nari Manch at the Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch and was attended by 151 women’s groups from the Jain community.
She said that women should stand up and be counted and, for this, they should necessarily vote. “All women have the power and right to vote and should do so for candidates on the basis of character and service done. If they do not wish to vote for a particular candidate, they should fill up the O’ form; but each vote should get registered.”
Speaking about rising crime, terror and corruption, she said that poor upbringing of children and general lack of values in the young generation were to be blamed. “After 10 years, India will become the youngest and largest democracy in the world. The young generation is the future and should be taught values right from the beginning.” She also underlined the need for women to earn and financially support the family.
Bedi also touched upon the topic of domestic violence and said “it should not be ignored and women must stop it at the initial stage itself to maintain their self-respect and dignity.”
She urged the Jain women’s groups to discuss issues like learning law, computers, reading, yoga, spiritualism and education during their meetings.
