Bihar cops to join courses on criminal laws

Patna: After being reprimanded by the National as well as the State Human Rights Commissions for its failure to adhere to their guidelines, the Bihar government has decided to impart fresh lessons on criminal laws to police personnel.

The government has approached top officials of the newly established Chanakya National Law University at Patna to get policemen enrolled for training on criminal law.

“There have been a lot of changes in criminal law in the past one decade. But, our cops are not aware of new changes. As a result they have to face a lot of difficulties in discharge of duty. There is need to arrange special classes for them on criminal law,” a senior police officer said.

Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) Registrar A P Singh, who has been appointed coordinator of the training programme, said initially 27 deputy superintendents and inspectors would be imparted training at the institute.

Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University Vice Chancellor Bal Raj Singh Chauhan, BB Pandey of Delhi University, A Laxminath of the CNLU and Bihar State Forensic Science Laboratory Director S B Upadhyay would be key teachers who will deliver lectures on criminal law.

Former Bihar DGP D N Gautam, Shafi Alam, Abhayanand (both ADGs), Dinendra Kashyap, SP, CBI have also been requested to take classes. The selected cops would also be taught about latest development in the field of forensic science and scientific method of investigation.
