Bihar to construct its own East West Corridor

east west corridorBihar has planned to construct a 557 km road along Indo-Nepal Border. This Road would have 2 lanes  and  would also run parallel to East-West Corridor.  If the construction starts in April 2012, the it would be ready by 2016.

Benefits

The road would help in keeping the vigilance on the Inter-Border Activities with Nepal.  It would  smoothen the operations of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in its bid to maintain vigil on trans-border activities.

 Cost

The cost of the construction is estimated to be Rs 2500 Crores.  Central Government would provide Rs 1,799 crores while the rest Rs. 801 crores would be borne by the Bihar Government. Bihar Government would also bear the cost for land acquisition for the road project and its maintenance. National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) would also sponsor the construction of few bridges.

Geography

The road would pass through  West Champaran (110.35 km), East Champaran (74.29 km), Sitamarhi (89.50 km), Madhubani (40.15 km), Supaul (40.99 km), Araria (104.02 km) and Kishanganj (98.05 km). It would also link up and merge with around 118 km of the existing national highways (NHs) – 104 km of NH-104, 19 km of NH-57 and 5 km of NH-106

Tender

The tender for this road  has been floated and 13 bids received from construction companies.

Name

The name of the Road has not been finalised yet. However, speculations are that it would be named after Jaiprakash Narayan. It is popularly called as the East West Corridor of Bihar
