The Detailed Project Proposal for Patna Metro Railways shall be finalized by December 2013. It is being prepared by RITES Ltd, a subsidiary of Indian Railways. Â The work on DPR preparation started in the month of July.
According to Abhay Negi, Â DGM of RITES Ltd, the project would be designed keeping in mind the requirement of Population of Patna in next 100 years.
By 2051, the local population of Patna is expected to cross 36 Lakhs and the Metro is expected to provide the Facility of Transport to over 10 Lakhs of People.
“Currently, public transport is only 12% of the total vehicular movement. The proposed metro rail would cover 50-70% of traffic in peak hours, if integrated with the para transit modes of transportation”, Abhay Negi was quoted saying in an conference organized by Indian Chamber of Commerce, Patna Chapter.
Experts at the Conference also discussed the ways to handle the ever growing traffic of Patna and several solutions were proposed.
“Road surface improvement, signalized intersections, putting in place circulation plans such as one-way streets or vehicular segregation, traffic calming techniques, developing and barricading footpaths and foot overbridges and establishment of a single-window traffic management centre can cater to many problems,” said Ishita Chauhan, an urban transport expert, Institute of Urban Transport, adding that a cost-effective and systematic public transport system was the need of the hour. “Since Patna is a longitudinal city, a one-kilometre radius zone on the arterial roads would cover the entire city,” she said.
The project of Patna Metro was first envisaged in 2011. The 30 km long Project will be based on Public-Private Partnership. The project’s total cost would be about 8000 Crore. The entire Metro System would be elevated.  On June 11,2013, Bihar cabinet approved the proposal to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for Metro train service in Patna. Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) was selected for the purpose. The Government further sanctioned 2.52 crore as consultancy fee to RITES. Â
The Inaugural Run of Patna Metro Rail is expected by 2016. It would have two corridors.
- Corridor 1 (15Â km): Saguna More-Bailey Road-Dakbangalow Chowk-Frazer Road-Gandhi Maidan Marg
- Corridor 2 (25Â km):Â Danapur-Digha-Kurji-Raja Pul-Gandhi Maidan Marg-Ashok Rajpath-Agamkuan-Didarganj (Patna City)
The government also plans to construct a third Metro line from Patna Junction to Digha Ghat passing through the heart of the city.
