The Planning Commission has crossed the mark of 1,00,000 followers on Twitter. This has been the result of a sustained Social Media Campaign since the beginning of this year. To accomplish this, Planning Commission conducted a series of activities during the last few months to engage the country’s youth in learning about the planning process and the contents of the Twelfth Plan.

The social media campaign was launched by the Planning Commission and the National Innovation Council on March 15 this year with a Google Hangout on the 12th Plan, which was broadcast online as well as re-telecast on various television channels. During the Hangout, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia and other Members answered questions taken from citizens on social media and from a panel with representation from industry, civil society, a Member of Parliament, and a Sarpanch.
The next major event organized by the Planning Commission was the first ever 12th Plan Hackathon on April 6 and 7, 2013. The event was inaugurated by Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission and Shri Sam Pitroda, Adviser to the PM. This 32-hour marathon event was held in ten locations across the country and saw a total of 217 submissions from over a thousand participants in these locations. Participants prepared a variety of content focusing on health, rural development and agriculture, urban development, energy, water and environment and the macroeconomic framework. The Planning Commission recently shared presentations made by District Collectors on best practices in rural and urban development, education, disaster management etc.
In addition to its presence on Twitter, the Planning Commission has attracted over 30,000 subscribers on Facebook (www.facebook.com/plancomindia), over 50,000 views on YouTube (www.youtube.com/plancomindia) and over 65,000 views on 54 presentations uploaded on SlideShare(www.slideshare.com/plancomindia).
