CREDAI threatens Strike from 8 July if Cement Price Hike Not Rolled Back

Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India today declared that the central government should roll back hiked prices of cement for the construction industry to survive. They have said if this is not done then the Association will go on a strike from 8th July onwards.

CREDAI members said that recently cement price has been hiked by nearly Rs. 60 rupees from 260 to 320 rupees. This price hike will come into effect from 1st July 2014 and has seen an unprecedented increase of over 25% per bag.

With this increase of Rs.60 per bag there will be an impact on the sluggish construction activity in the state. The price hike will affect the builders, consumers and the construction labourers. CREDAI is going to stop purchase of cement from 30th June .

If the price is not rolled back before 7th July then CREDAI is talking of stopping the construction work indefinitely.

CREDAI Secretary laid down that construction workers were badly hit by this cement price hike.

“This price hike can never be justified as it is disproportional to the cement production cost. It has been decided along with the Builders Association of India and others to stop work from July 7 onwards if the prices are not rolled back,” Suresh Krishna, the vice president and convenor, Joint Action Committee, Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association (CREDAI) told reporters here.

According to CREDAI president Ajit Chordia, the step is to protect customers against the price hike.

The CREDAI, Builders Association of India and other associations urged the government to take immediate steps to reduce the import duty on cement. They also demand the government to facilitate fast track mechanism for getting the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) seal for imported cement.
