May 12 earthquake damages Australian orphanage in Nepal

Kathmandu: A temporary shelter for orphans has been built after Nepal’s second major earthquake damaged an Australian-funded orphanage.

Australian host mothers from Adelaide’s Pulteney Grammar School, Lynne Rawson and Jo Bourchier, arrived in Nepal last week to assess the damage done to the orphanage in a remote part of Kathmandu.

They brought in relief aid, tents, food and medicines for the children who were displaced after the first earthquake hit Nepal on April 25. Following the second earthquake on Tuesday, the orphanage building was further damaged, leaving it unsafe for the children to live in.

All 55 children living at the orphanage have been forced to sleep outside. Worried about a possible landslide, the mothers set up tents for the children on flat ground away from the orphanage. Carpenters and masons have been building temporary shelter using bamboo sticks and tin sheets.
